told you last night we have an out of control situation. in california, gasoline prices have been rocketing higher in the last 24 hours it has gotten even worse getting close to $6 a gallon in some places. others have no gas to sell at all. nbc's kristen dahlgren from los angeles with us. good evening >> reporter: good evening, since we talked yesterday, things have gone up, take a look. 5.89 as prices in california close in on all-time record highs. just when people in california thought things couldn't get worse. >> five bucks? oh, my god. >> reporter: even bigger sticker shock. >> i had no idea it had gone up this much, you know, just overnight. >> reporter: prices up another 20 cents a gallon since midnight. >> how can it go from what was it? 4.70 a week ago? in california, the price is up 36 cents, to 4.49, 67 cents from last year when gas was 3.82. and some stations are topping five dollars, that is if they have gas. many costco stations shut down this week after running out. and independent stations say they can barely break even. wholesale prices are so high. >> every day,

to avoid driving. how about the price of gas? hit an all-time high in california. the average price in the state is now $4.61 a gallon. beating the previous record set in 2008 by less than a tenth of a penny. a sharp price increase began earlier this week. it's blamed on reduced supply and a volatile market in part due to the chevron refinery fire on august 6th. a gallon of regular will cost you an average 4.68 in san francisco. it's 4.63 in san jose and oakland. prices throughout the state are expected to climb for several more days before finally leveling off. >>> a murder mystery in hercules where a woman was found dead last night in her home. her car stolen from the garage. police have no suspects and few clues in the killing which has left friends and neighbors stunned. here's the story. reporter: family, friends, rushed to this house on ash court, where police say a woman's body was found inside. >> i don't believe it until i come here. oh, shocking. is shocking. reporter: neighbors say the woman living here for 25 years was suzy ko and was supposed to pick her husband up from

, according to aaa, fuel gauge report. the cost of gas in california increased dramatically this weeks but a problem unique to the state. california is dealing with suplay challenges. the fire at the chevron in richmond caused lower production and a fire in la recently. california's gasoline inventories are at the lowest levels in ten years. people we spoke to had they own opinions. >> they give us the wantings, we heard about it. who knows, i don't know, what is the reason for it? bottom line is my i'm not making more money but paying more in gas, continuesly. particularly in california. it's really bad. >> reporter: take a look at what is happening in san jose. a week ago regular unleaded costs $4.16 a gallon. yesterday $4.38 a gallon. today the average climbed up to $4.54 a gallon. that means that the jump of $0.38 in just a week. the prices are high in the bay area, in la, the prices are even higher and several stations there it's gone over $5 a gallon and some station owners are shutting down the pumps because they don't want to charge customers the higher prices just to break eve

filed the weekly report and when the quarterly report comes in in many states, including california people had to reapply for benefits. that didn't happen. that report didn't come in, it was artificially depressed by about 30,000 claimants and most expect it had to be around 369,000 claims. what happened last week was not an accurate picture. the problem for the department was this, they did not explain that thoroughly in their press release. stuart: right. >> and that's what kicks up a lot of distrust. stuart: so, this week's number shall the one that came out today. 388,000, that seems to me like a very high number. i've characterized this as painting a miserable picture of the employment situation. how about you? >> well, here is the thing, if you're at a range around 330,000 numbers it means that you have pretty good economy going on, some growth ogg on and that type of thing. the closer to 400,000 is recession territory, so with 388,000, part of this problem with this number you set it in motion last week. for confidence in the markets, what's important here is leadership. and

to stay into the eastern pacific. go from northern california to southern california today and tomorrow. it has allowed for the winds to shift. a light northerly wind warming up the bay area, southern california bringing plenty of sunshine. in fact temperatures all around the bay will be warmer than average. how about that 90 in los angeles. some freezing fog in the northern sierra with temperatures in the upper 20s. 61, but mainly 70s and 80s today. 66 half moon bay. nice and mild there with 76 in palo alto. san jose, low 80s inland east bay. 69 in monterey. we have quite an about-face with our weather. detroit low to mid 40s for the game this evening. nice day tomorrow. sea breeze cooling us off on monday. more cooling on tuesday and rain moving in by midday. then maybe an inch of rain in the north bay. quarter to half an inch and linger into first day of november on thursday. so if you like the rain that is coming, or above normal temperatures we got that, too. >> word of advice based on personal experience, clean the rain gutters out. >> lisa: did you do that. >> terry: i did it. >>

and this cold front moving into northern california, not much in the way of rainfall just yet into the state, but as you can see right now, we're going to hold onto the cloud cover into the afternoon hours, mostly cloudy sky, cooling trend will continue. first thing tomorrow morning you'll notice the presence especially in the north bay. rainfall will be on the increase and more cooling expected. this front fizzling out as it heads southward but as you can pick out, rainfall expectations could be over an inch in the north bay. heading to the south bay, maybe just about a 10th of an inch to a quarter inch. winds will be a factor as well, up to 40 miles an hour, and in the syria, a winter storm warning begins late tonight on through monday and early tuesday morning. here is our forecast model showing you some cloud cover, and into the evening hour. still mostly cloudy skies. that first ranted of rain heading to the south. first thing monday morning at 6:00. we'll expand the view. this will be a fairly quick mover because by late into the morning and afternoon hours on monday, we scale back on
